city bus system - Answers for Hanoi

Asked about 4 months ago by wklepacki

city bus system

So im currently taking buses around the city as i just moved here, and am waiting to find an adequate motorbike. ive been catching bus #9 from Bo Ho (the terminal at hoan kiem lake) and i need to transfer to #49 at kham thien. sometimes i end up getting the bus that goes the short way (chieu di) and sometimes i get the bus that goes the super long way (chieu ve). is there any way to tell the difference between these buses at Bo Ho?

If you look at the board immediately in front of the driver at the bottom of the windscreen you will see the bus route name. The Red colour is one way and Blue colour is the reverse way; we have taken both for fun, but can't remember which one goes Doi Can to Kim Ma and which one goes Ba Trieu to Kim Ma. My suggestion is you stand at the corner of Trang Thi and Ba Trieu, you will be able to figure out which one you want. One turns right from Le Thai To and goes west and up Dien Bein Phu and Doi Can, the other goes down Ba Trieu towards Kham Thien.

Okay, as mentioned by JDanHK, in addition to the bus number and route printed on the front top of the bus, there's a sign that's often placed on the passenger side of the windshield that tells you which way the bus's going. In case of bus #9, if you want to go the short way, take the bus with the sign that says "Bo Ho - Cua Nam - Cau Giay" and if you want to go the long way, take one that says "Bo Ho - Cong Vien Thong Nhat - Cau Giay". Happy rides!

yep, thanks all for your answers. per your advice, JDandHK, i looked at the colors on the board, and sure enough, there was a red and blue. the blue one (on all the bus routes) chieu di and the red one means chieu ve.
