Arrived at my place 10mins after I called him, which was about 1min after I found these reviews....
$45 per month for a Honda Wave, good condition, (although I ran over a nail and replaced the inner tube and found the inner tube had about 10 patches on it). Note I called Mr Cao when I got the flat and he would have sorted it for me but he was out of Hanoi on Tet holiday so I got it done myself. Mr Cao told me not to pay more than 70k, but I got charged 95k, not the end of the world....
2 helmets included...
On the contract I will owe him $1000 if anything happens to bike (i.e stolen)...I'm not sure if this is fair market value or not but seems reasonable to me.

I currently rent from Mr Cao. Honda Wave for the usual 45 dollars per month. He has cheaper bikes - showed me a SYM Angel for 29,- if you want to take the risk.
He will come to your place to give you a look at his bikes and try them out if you let him now in advance in what kind you are interested. Promised me to upgrade me to a Wave RS after one month. Unfortunately I won't find out if he remembers this because I will leave the country soon.
Let me pay for a new tube (my fault I didn't call him right away), because I had a pretty bad puncture and was in a hurry so I had to use a repair shop. Send someone to oversee the repairs to make sure they do a good job though. Speaks good english and seems always available in case of repairs.

Cao is a great man to rent a bike from. I've been renting a Wave from him for about 3 months, and have always found him to be available whenever I need him, and to be on top of oil changes and when the contract is about to be up. I don't have to worry about anything with him. The only potential downside is that if he calls you, be sure to call him back IMMEDIATELY. He has an unfortunate tendency to call every five minutes until he gets in touch with you.

I rented a Nuovo from an OQ travel agency when I first arrived in Hanoi for $85 a month. I liked the bike lots but didn't like shelling out so much dong every month.
I spent 2 months on the bike, shopping around for a better price and found most were ~$80 per month. I could get a Wave from anyone for cheaper, and considered a Sym from BD, but really liked the Nuovo and wanted another.
I found Mr Cao by chance and gave him a holla. He quoted me $60 for the same bike I was paying $85 for. I decided to give it a go, but kinda expected a broken down go-cart. Mr Cao came to meet me on my clean, shiny and newer bike with fewer kms than the one I had just left.
K, but wait.
I got a flat tire about 2 weeks later and called Mr Cao to ask what I should do. I know I could have gone down the street to have it repaired but didn't know how much I should pay and didn't want to get hosed. Cao came to my house, took the bike to be repaired and came back 20 mins later with everything all fixed up. A week later I had a problem with my new bike stalling at stoplights. Mr Cao came to my house again, took the bike to his shop, repaired it, and brought it back in 2 hours - no charge. That's some stellar service.
Give Mr Cao a call if you're looking for a rental and see what he offers.
