Frozen shoulder blade syndrome (whatever that is) must be something we all suffer with from one time to another as we have to drive these little bikes all hunched over while carrying enough crap in a backpack for a mountain mule. Well that's my excuse anyway as I made my way to see Mrs Thuy, the owner of this fine establishment. I could hardly move in the morning when I got out of bed so I struggled to get all the way over to West Lake to visit the clinic.
The place itself is very clean, very professional and immediately, I felt at ease. I explained my predicament and was passed to the assistant for the "deep massage," which lasted about 50 minutes. That was painful, to say the least, but I will say that I had more range of motion when she checked me again.
Following that I had a session of acupuncture which lasted another 40 minutes and I did feel better at the end. Not completely of course, but much better than my useless lump not being able to roll out of bed that morning.
I know what acupuncture costs in other countries and have tried it before quite a few times so when I shelled out less than $10 for this I felt guilty and wondered how I could make an exit discreetly. So I paid the money quickly and sped off into the sunset for fear they had made a mistake. Too cheap, too cheap I kept thinking. Go here if all else fails or if you are simply fed up with conventional medication.
My first visit here was a very good experience but ensuing visits have been less than pleasing. I have requested acupuncture for an ailment that is ongoing and I know from experience what works, but they continue to give me deep tissue massage which exacerbates the problem. Even in face to face conversations with Dr Thuy I make my request and give my reasons but my request gets ignored. Granted sometimes the massage felt good but it doesn't help what I what I went there for. For this reason I now go somewhere else.
I've been getting massages at Yakushi since they moved to Xuan Dieu...sometimes once or twice a week, sometimes once or twice a month. As others have said, there is a variance in quality (and I never remember which Hoa I prefer). However, I've generally solved the problem by calling first to insure Dr. Thuy is there when I go for a massage, so I have the chance to sit with her and describe what I need, which she then explains at length to the masseur. She'll often come back and check to see how things are. The times I've gone and not spoken directly to Dr. Thuy first have been the lesser quality experiences. Additionally, the phone reception has been iffy in the past -- for example I made an appointment to see Dr. Thuy, arrived there, and waited for 15 minutes. It felt wierd so I asked when she'd be available and was told she was not in the building. I called her directly and she was very apologetic, saying they'd made the appointment without checking with her first, which was a bad habit that she was trying to correct (and I realize they were being polite to me in not wanting to say no.)rn While I enjoy general wellness massages, I had two occasions where I hurt my back, and Yakushi really helped me with pain relief. Another time, I had canker sores on my tongue that were driving me insane and Dr. Thuy insisted massage would not help and that I needed acupuncture (on my face and neck, which I found terrifying at first, but provided major relief.) Because I was so scared by the ideas of needles in my throat, Dr. Thuy directed TWO assistants to stay and massage my hands and feet during the entire treatment to keep me calm. The lasting sense of serenity after the experience was amazing; and the sores cleared up, too. My kids love to get massages here as well. We make regular bookings, and specify in advance kids are coming, so they know to reserve the entire 3 bed space for us. I think Yakushi offers excellent massages at a great price and am happy to continue patronizing them.
I've been experiencing some very painful neck and shoulder issues so I researched TNH and decided to try Yakushi. Also highly recommended by a couple of friends.
I have to say I was not impressed. I clearly explained where I was experiencing pain, it was even repeated back to me. My massage started out promising; she spent a few minutes on neck and shoulder pressure points. After those few little moments, the rest of the massage was spent in applying oil and rubbing it all over my body with very little pressure. I asked for more concentrated work on my problem areas but something was definitely lost in the translation.
Maybe I just wasn't lucky enough to have someone who knew what they were doing - don't know. What I do know is that my neck and shoulder are screaming at me and I am not returning to Yakushi.
I gave it two stars because it smells nice in the reception/waiting room and I was offered a cup of tea when I arrived.
Oh, the bathroom wasn't clean either - not nice.
This is the best massage spot I have found in Hanoi. And I surely have looked for one!
It's true what has been said: there's a big variety in staff-vice. But last time I had an excellent massuer, and I know if I keep going back to her treatment I keep being fully satisfied with the quality of the service! It was not too tough nor too gentle - just right. I wrote down her name, but have lost the card where I wrote it to. Hopefully will find it or have equally excellent luck next time. I just wish there were more places like this in Hanoi!
