Sexy hair once again, thank you JusT.in.M! (03/03/12)

My friends and I decided to check out this jazz club. I've lived in Vietnam for 2 years and have never been so cheated off/dealt with such an unprofessional staff as I have tonight at this place.

When we arrived, we sat down and received a menu that quoted a particular price. I chose specifically hot tea that costed 25k VND. Somehow, the bill came out to 55k VND for my tea, more than double the price of the menu they originally handed to me. I asked the waiter about this, and he said I need to pay the higher price. When I asked why when it clearly listed a lower price on their menu, they said were so busy they gave us the lower priced menu but that there is actually a "correct", higher priced menu that's double of what they handed to me. In other words, it was THEIR fault for giving me a particular menu. Yet they continued demanding us to pay for their 2x inflated menu, plus some exorbitant tax fee that in my two years of frequenting coffee shops and bars in Vietnam, have never had to pay.

Coincidentally, a foreign couple before us also argued with the staff because they also had to pay a higher price. They got one menu that charged one thing but then was expected to pay more because of some "music listening fee." (Which is funny because my group didn't get that argument -- inconsistent and shady much?)

The waiter began arguing with us for refusing to pay the inflated price. I responded by telling them that we paid the price as it was given to us. We proceeded to exit the premises, where they then confiscated my friend's bike, put a lock on it, and demanded we pay the higher price. They yelled at my friend and me and intimidated us. They threatened to take everyone's bikes and motorbikes if we didn't pay their inflated fee. They called me an indecent, rude foreigner for arguing with them when they were, at best, incompetent for giving us a different menu, and at worst, engaging in straight up dishonest, unethical, and unprofessional business practices, cheating us off, making us pay double, and threatening us.

Never coming here again. Am warning all my friends about this place.

Utter disappoint. Thank you for my worst experience in Vietnam (I've been here for 8 months).

The problem is that there are 2 menus - one if you are foreign and one if you are local. Since some of my friends and I are foreign Vietnamese we got the local menu. Once our other (not so Viet looking) friends came our bill more than doubled. That is completely, ridiculously (and obviously) dishonest especially for a seemingly nicer establishment in Hanoi.

I know this is not rare as the Malaysian table in front of us had the same issue that night. It led to the staff yelling at us in the restaurant and in the street, man handling our personal belongings, and cussing at us for an extended amount of time. I felt small, disrespected, vulnerable, and cheated. Although Minh is a good sax player I don't think this place deserves your money - go to the other jazz places popping up with talented artists around Hanoi.

I love the venue, but had a bad experience the last time I was there. Me and a friend had one beverage each and asked for the bill, it arrived with a 60k charge added, and the wait staff said it was for “listing to the music”. WTF, this seems to be another tay tax!! Maybe you should tell us before we set down that you are going to charge us for this? Love the jazz and will have a chat with Minh over this. The jazz is 5 stars the staff 0 stars for cheating us.

Update - June 13, 2011

After receiving a reply from Minh saying that they had repealed the "cover charge" I decided to visit last night. Honor and integrity is something missing here now as instead of a cover charge, they raised drink prices by 100%. I did not have an issue with a cover charge, but what I did have an issue with was not being told this before the bill arrived, that is dishonest. Jazz is still great, but there are many other venues now playing jazz where this "over charging" does not go on.

Leeman,
Thanks for your comments. Minh and Binh clearly heard you (the staff wasn't cheating you)--- as of 1 June 2011 the cover charge has been eliminated (it was 30,000VND ($1.45)) - There is NO cover charge. Thank you for voicing your concern! The Jazz club is open nightly, beginning at 9 PM.

Good place for live music, although there are many new places that do jazz or have jazz nights Minh's been doing this for years. Even with having to move venues three or more times he keeps on going and you have to respect that. The music is usually good and guest musicians or singers are always welcomed, some notables have turned up here from NY or Paris or HK and have been great. Yes the drinks are pricey but it's payment for the entertainment similar to a movie ticket or such. The amount of smoke in here can be staggering at times but always a nice spot to come and relax.

Live jazz from 9-11PM.

Went there on Monday, it was rather empty, with 3-4 tables occupied, mix of locals and expats, despite that they were playing till ~11:20PM. Nice music, piano, 2 guitars and drums, drummer was really good.

Went again on Friday, place was packed, mainly expats, good music, different musicians than other night, piano, sax, drums and double bass. Saxophone was my favorite this time.

Other than that, service is fine, prices are reasonable considering you get live music (e.g. 40k for bottle of Bia Hanoi).

If you like jazz, recommended.
