Seems like most foreign food in Hanoi is overpriced or more concerned with appearance than taste, and usually both. Cafe CCCP avoids both of these: tasty, good price, and guess what- the appearance follows in line and the place has great atmosphere for a dinner!

and its nice to hear a language other than Vietnamese buzzing around me. as with Vietnamese, I have no idea what is being said, but still nice to have different words and sounds put to my ignorance :)

One star off as they didn't have half the stuff on the menu- but then that also added to the atmosphere... but then it all looked so good and I wanted some of the delicious-sounding, and listed but unavailable dishes...

Drink!

Great little place, and so much better than Bud Mo, the other Ukrainian restaurant in town. Certainly, the menu is rather more limited, but what they do, they do right. For example, their sour cream is actually sour. They don't serve you beef and pretend it's lamb. And the beer's cold at CCCP cafe.

OK, so that's my not-so-subtle dig at Bud Mo out of the way. On the menu at CCCP, you'll find things like dumplings, various kinds of cutlets, pancakes stuffed with cream cheese and Russian salad (home made and good - not ridiculously over-mayonnaised as the locals tend to make it here). I didn't try their borscht, but my dining companion rated it. And of course black bread! Good stuff.

And cheap! The prices here are very, very reasonable. I think their most expensive dish is VND45,000 (a large bowl of dumplings), and others are around the VND20-25,000 mark. OK, if you only had one VND20,000 dish you'd go away hungry, but at these prices why not splash out and order two or three plates?

The desserts didn't absolutely rock my world, but they were good and certainly hit the spot. We shared a piece of Napoleon pie, which someone at the table compared to an Australian vanilla slice - which (if done well) is certainly no insult. And someone ordered a chocolate slice, which was...well...very chocolatey, so I guess chocolate fans would be satisfied with that.

The drinks selection could be pushed a little bit more, I think - it'd be nice to see some interesting Eastern European or Russian beers and vodkas available. But as I said earlier, the Hanoi beer was cold.

The place is very much a family-run operation - in a good way, with mum and dad eating lunch in one of the booths and occasionally barking out orders to their kids if something isn't up to scratch. One of the sons speaks very good English, which is a good thing, as the menu's in Russian and Vietnamese only. If you're planning on visiting the cafe, you might want to check in advance that he's there so he can help you with the menu. Anyway, he was a friendly, patient and helpful host. A nice, warm, family environment to be found here. The decor's a bit dog-eared, but not especially so. It's not a place you'd take a hot date, but definitely a group of friends or your family.

So if you're craving some comfort food and not feeling especially weight-conscious, CCCP cafe's well worth a visit.

I'll give CCCP cafe 5 stars because the food and service were spot on, especially for the price.
Coming from a Russian/Ukrainian background, I know my cuisine in this area, if I do say so myself. The dishes tasted as good as mine and my mother's:) I went with a Vietnamese friend who didn't mind me chatting away in Russian and we both found the place quite friendly.
We ordered 2 kotleti(like a tasty rissole but flat), fried potato, large serve of pelmeni, chebyriki(a bit like pies/pasties) and what I call cirniki for dessert(a quark like/cottage cheese patty). Unfortunatley they didn't have the Russian potato salad or blini with meat, but I won't remove a star for that, as what we ordered was great. We also had 1 beer Hanoi and some green tea. All of this came in at 205,000 vnd. Bargain!
I will be back.

At first, I had a hard time finding this place, the street numbering is difficult to follow. But on arrival, it was nice to see that there was ample parking space.

Opening the door, and the place is a little on the dark side, but invitingly so. Large chairs, sofas and tables, Air con and sweeping fans all make this place feel comfortable.

This small, family run business, produces excellent food at a very good price, value for money is high. Between five guests our food and drinks bill, which included a bottle of wine, came out at just over d150,000.00 per person.

The place is a little rough around the edges but, it is inviting, welcoming, comfortably eclectic, and the food is superb! Well worth a visit.

Couldn't agree more with the other reviews:
A bit ramshackle decor but everything was delicious and well worth the inexpensive price. I have hardly had any Ukranian food but it must be in my DNA because the flavors are exactly to my liking especially the pickles - reminded me of good kosher dills with no sweetness...Only knock off a star for the (seeming) lack of many menu items and the fact that my takeaway portions did not seem to match what I was served in the restaurant. Minor quibbles as I will definitely be returning!

Order a small plate of Pelmeni, make sure you ask for it with some soup, & ask for a chebyreki to go - a great snack anytime!
