Has anybody had any recent experience of applying and paying for a 3 year work permit recently. I have just been informed by a colleague, who is at this stage of the process ( I am not, quite yet) that the company we work for are telling her she is expected to pay $800 for her work permit via a salalry deduction , which will be repaid after 6 months????? It is the amount being paid that I ma querying here, not the company's ethics of promising to pay back after 6 months ( they might as we...

Hi, I wonder if anyone can share about what do you like to read about Vietnam or Vietnamese people? I'm reading reviews about books about Vietnam/Vietnamese people, such as: Ru by Kim Thuy, No man's Land by Duong Thu Huong, "The Beauty of Humanity Movement" by Camilla Gibb, etc and wonder if anyone can share some others. Also what do you like to read about Vietnam or Vietnamese people which you think have not been written yet? (I'm asking since I'm nurturing an idea to write a bo...

I'm not sure whether this site is applicable for my circumstances. I am searching for a relevant site that will put me in touch with someone Vietnamese who is seeking a working holiday in Australia. Is this site applicable? Perhaps, someone can guide me to an appropriate site, if not. Thank you.

I've noticed that things are rapidly changing in the Se Asian countries regarding teaching english. I have been scouring the boards, here and elsewhere in search of some solid answers but i have been unsuccessful. Hopefully a new question will open the doors to some new answers. I am 26, my gf is 23. The current state of our home country ( USA ) is in decline and it's becoming extremely difficult to make a comfortable living here. In addition, we would like to explore and travel the world. ...

Help TEFL folks! I’m excited to teach but I have zero experience. I’m waiting for the April CELTA class to start and would love to monitor/assist/teach classes in the meantime. Please get in touch with any thoughts or offers. Thanks!

Hello! I will move with my family that includes 8 month old baby to Hanoi this October. Was wondering if babyfood is easily available in shops? Families with babies and infants - maybe you have some other important information that we should know beforehand? Thanks!

Does anyone have any recommendations for ante natal classes or experiences that they can share. If possible I'd like to find classes run in English, so my wife doesn't have to worry about translating for me, although I figure that's a long shot. This will be our first baby, so I need all the help I can get! Any advice, suggestions or recommendations welcomed.

I'll be arriving in Hanoi in less than a month to search for a job teaching English and I was wondering if anyone has advice on what to do when I first get there. There are the obvious things like job searching and apartment hunting, but are there specific places to network (clubs, bars, cafes, etc), tours to go on, and exploring to do that would help me get to know the city a bit better? Also, I'll be on my own, so the places would need to accommodate for this - ie, going to a nightclub on m...

Hi all, We are moving to Hanoi and are so excited!!! We have 2 kids: girl of 4 years old and boy of 7. We are wondering what are the options for International schools in Hanoi? I heard of UNIS but there school fee is quite over our budget, hmm... Our budget is about $10,000-$15,000/ year and we need to choose the one that offers teaching in English ( our kids can't really speak Vietnamese that fluent, yet ;)) Any other suggestions are VERY MUCH appreciated; especially from parents!! ...

I'd like to get my motorbike down to Saigon from Danang. I was wondering whether i could put the motorbike on the train and then fly down myself and go pick it up? (I wanted to avoid a whole day's travel on the train). Does anyone have any experience doing this? or know anything more about it?

Dear TNH Hanoi members, First of all, I would like to introduce myself. I am Tran Thi Thuy Binh, a journalist of HanoiTV, the third largest broadcasting organization in Vietnam I heard that many of you are concerned about the air quality of Hanoi. I am doing an infographic on opinions of people, including foreigners who live in Hanoi for more than 3-5 years. I welcome answer from all of you, yet I would like to have voices from all genders. I have had about 5 opinions from middle-aged w...

I am married to a Vietnamese woman and we have 2 children. I built a house in Vietnam as security for her and the children's future but as foreigners could not own land in Vietnam a few years ago it is all in her name. Of course she has never worked so I paid for everything 100%. I brought her to Australia 18 months ago, she got her residency and has now left me and taken the children. Can I stop her from selling the house and am I entitled to recover the money I spent on it?
