I'm new to Hanoi and am looking at buying a bike to zoom around the city but have absolutely NO idea about mechanics/brands etc. Is there anywhere or anyone who can help out a gal who doesn't want to end up with a piece of junk?
For reliability and cost effectiveness as in great resale value I would go with a Honda Future. The older Future's are very nice and comfortable to ride even for me a 120kg guy to ride while yet being almost as light as the Honda Wave's that one can't avoid here.
You can buy these between 10-14mill VND. I would recommend leaning more towards the 14 side of things. I have recommended these bikes on numerous occasions to friends who are here for 6+ months and they have always been able to resell them to Vietnamese for usually a loss of about 400-700k from what they paid for originally. The bike is what a lot of people here call "semi automatic." Which seems to mean that they are manual, but without clutches so just push the gear down and go. Great on gas mileage and fairly decent looking when comparing to others.
Here is a link for a bike for sale in HCMC just for a reference on what the bike looks like. http://forum.gocmuaban.com/hcm-honda-future-1-doi-2005-ban-hoac-doi-exciter-18951.html
Thanks muchly, that'll get me started...
Now where exactly does one go to look for one? I heard there is a 'street' selling 2nd-hand bikes but not feeling too confident about going there. I may be dreaming but is there a shop or something that may well charge me a little more but I can know I'm not being ripped off too badly? Otherwise where's the best place to rent until one pops up in the classifieds?
