Anywhere in Hanoi sell or rent mandolins (not ukelele)? Ideally I'd find a western/"Gibson" style with an arch top and F holes (like a violin), but I'd settle for any decent type of mandolin.

I did find a luthier that has some, but I'm looking for $200 or less for an OK quality. I've searched this forum and have visited and/or called shops suggested for music instruments and guitar stores. Hoa Nam street I only saw 3 or 4 stores....maybe I missed some? I've also checked stores on the "string instrument" streets in the old quarter.

Thanks,
Dave

I've been meaning to check out mandolins from Thanh Cam Music (http://www.thanhcammusic.com/index.htm), but haven't gotten around to it yet. One of the tuning pegs broke off my mandolin a few weeks ago, which needs fixing, but I've been thinking about buying another mandolin too, just 'cause...

Anyway, according to the site their F-style mandolins start at $200. I can't confirm the quality, having not been there, but it's worth a look I think.

Sorry - just noticed that you also linked to Thanh Cam in the guitar shopping thread. I'm afraid I don't have any other ideas to offer. If you happen to be travelling to the South any time in the near-ish future, I'm sure there would be options in HCMC worth considering. I stumbled upon a luthier's shop a few summers ago there, bought a nice little ukulele. If you're interested, I'll see if I can find their name/address.
