It is a Tale of Two Restaurants.

Hanoi Panic! was great when it was in the Trang Thi alley but is terrible today at its new location on Xuan Dieu.

Mon, what happened? It seems like you have sold your soul to big (or at least bigger) business and the soul in your food has gone to foodie heaven. Unlike the carefree and friendly Mon that we all know and love, you look pained and joyless in this new location as though you are in foodie hell.

Since I live around the West Lake, I was very excited to hear that Hanoi Panic! had moved to Xuan Dieu. No more having to go to the CBD to get decent Thai food.

I have been to the new location twice and both experiences have been awful. What is the saying "Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me". I am not sure if there will be 3rd time to fool me again.

Let's get specific. Granted, the new place is much nicer than the old place (not difficult to beat an alley for a location). However, we follow Mon for his food and not the aesthetics of his surroundings as evidenced by the fact that he was able to attract good and loyal business down an alley. Anyhow, the first time to the New Hanoi Panic!, I ordered a Pad Thai, a Tom Yum soup, and a beef salad for take away. Three strikes: Strike 1) I was the only customer yet they took nearly 40 minutes to get me the food; Strike 2) they had the wrong prices in their menu and charged significantly more - not sure how a newly opened restaurant can adjust its prices higher by 40% from a recently printed menu; and Strike 3) most importantly the food was absolutely horrible. I have eaten a lot of Thai food and it was the worst pad thai I have ever had. There was barely any noodle and the pad thai was mostly tofu and chicken. The tom yum was tasteless and bland. The salad was no better.

Since they just opened, I attributed it to growing pains so I came back a second time. Again, I ordered the pad thai and a couple of other dishes. Given how bad it was the first time, I did not think it was possible to make it worse the second time around. Yet they managed. It was like the pad thai was sitting in the fridge for a few days and they just threw it in the microwave. The tom yum was no better than the first time.

I really hate to write such a negative review and especially as this is the first review. However, I am not sure if Madake's intention is to be more of a bar than a Thai restaurant. Based on my experience, they should stick to being a bar and should free Mon up to bring the soul and life back to his cooking elsewhere.

Dinner Review.

I was torn on whether to give this place two or three stars, and decided on two for two reasons.
1: This is not a great dinner atmosphere, there are actually very few tables and very little in the way of decor. I was excited to have some Thai food, but was a bit surprised by how bare the place seemed.
2) The food was meh. My red curry was fine, although very runny. I added an entire bowl of rice and it was still like curry soup. The flavours were good though. The same could not be said for my friend's pad thai. She barely touched it and noticed that it had most likely been cooked the day before.
All of this would have been excused by the great service (seriously, it was great), but when my friend remarked that her pad thai was terrible, they did not take it off our bill. To be clear; she was not complaining, she had been asked if there was a problem and answered honestly.
If you want to do customer service correctly, you can't ask about terrible food and then do nothing.
Anyway, we won't be back for dinner, but I heard the nightlife is grand so I will try it again, after I have eaten.

Maybe OK as a hang out for gap year Kids (as long as they're not hungry), but it's a terrible restaurant.

Very hot in summer, very cold in winter. The pad thai is absolutely not pad thai..no taste, dry old looking piece of chicken, dry oily pieces of tofu...wrong kind of noodle.Try it twice, just had a few bite and left. This is not thai food, not even food at all.
EDIT
When you run a restaurant, the quality, taste of the food, should not depend on who is in the kitchen, the chef has the duty and responsability to train his assistant and make sure the quality stay the same.
But then you must be a CHEF.
Or should the customer check who is in the kitchen before ordering in a restaurant ? madake cannot be called a restaurant anyway.

I decided to try some take away from Madake on my way home. What a mistake!! The fish cakes were reasonable but mostly tasteless! But the worst was the Thai beef salad which was really almost in edible - the beef was really tough and I couldn't eat most of it and the rest of the salad was soggy cabbage and onion. Really disappointed and I won't be back!!

If you like Hanoi Panic! Thai Food @ Madake!...
