The only place I ever had anything stolen in Hanoi, my dear sandals.

A wonderful place to stroll during the morning, have a coffee in the afternoon, watch the traffic at night, and take off your shoes to swing your feet over the water before the sun comes up. Kind of awesome looking back, chasing a couple locals around the lake for my shoes while the old people are starting to get ready for tai chi, as my friends laugh their butts off. I miss when Hanoi was a great unknown to me and after dealing with the 5 stages of grief about my wonderful shoes is one of my fondest memories. The drive home was fun but trying to buy size 46 (11) sucks on shoe street.

It's hard to hate Hoan Kiem Lake. Really. I've tried. Sure, there are lots of hawkers and street dealers who will try to rob you blind if you give them the chance. Yes, there are not enough benches, not enough shaded areas, not enough space. But the charm is undeniable. In fact, the hussle and bussle going on around the perimeter adds to the magic, like Central Park in New York, a diamond in the rough.

It's not the nicest lake in Hanoi, and certainly not the nicest public space for relaxing, but it serves a purpose and it does that extremely well.

It's as if the city fathers of Hanoi picked one lake, perhaps in the time of Lê Thánh Tông, and decided to pour all their resources into it. To this day Hoàn Kiếm Lake remains the spiritual center of bourgeois Hà Nội. It is currently being beautified in preparation for the city's millennial anniversary, with themed artificial flower displays installed here and there and all the fronting buildings receiving new coats of paint.

In testament to its legacy of privilege, this lake features not one but two pagodas, Tháp Rùa (Turtle Tower) on a mystically inaccessible center island, and Chùa Ngọc Sơn (Jade Mountain Pagoda) which can be reached by crossing the iconic red bridge. Currently, Tháp Rùa is lit up by day-glo fairy lights that sparkle and change colors after dark, giving the dignified edifice a surreal nighttime appearance. At CNS, enjoy a little stroll around the island and learn all about the rare species of magical tortoise that is indigenous to Hồ Gươm.

Some cynics have suggested that the giant turtle is not real. Please forgive me for boasting that I have seen the giant turtle surface. Like a small Loch Ness monster, it appeared intermittently on the south side of the lake for a period of about fifteen minutes right after Tết this year, showing just the top of its head. An auspicious moment for all the people who crowded around to take pictures of the trail of bubbles left behind.

A great place to walk around and see local life. There are many foreigners there as well. Be careful with the sellers who try to sell you something. I was quite annoyed with them.

This is my love :)
I was born in Hanoi and living here till now is almost 23 years. But anytime I go pass this lake, I still see something new, so peaceful, so beautiful ... anytime I see, it seem like a new lake with difference color, difference size :) Can't use any word to say how much I love it.
