i've walk along the bridge several times and it's just amazing to watch busy traffic on the bridge but peaceful moment and space under the bridge and along the Red river.I saw alot of vietnamese couples or photographers get there to take pictures.

If you go half-way along the bridge and find the staircase leading down to the island, it's a lovely place to have a sort of countryside stroll. You can buy vegetables cheaper down there than in the markets and I usually get a wave or a nod from the island-dwellers. Maybe avoid hanging around under the bridge, but if you make it down to the swimming club and the small stilt houses you'll have plenty to see.

This is the historic bridge. Its romantic landscapes and unique architecture attracts citizens and visitors more and more. This is also amazing place for people who like taking photos and fall in love.

Red river flows slowly below this old bridge. In the early morning, you can see the hardworking farmers with their old bicycles moving in the fog. That's so nice and emotive.

I used to like to walk around this bridge when they didn't have motorbikes on it, only bicycles. It was very peaceful and we could enjoy a little quieter Hanoi. What a shame that now they allow bikes on it. It is not as fun anymore and not as safe to walk there because of the motorbikes whizzing by. But, if your power is cut some night, this is an ideal place to hang out and stay cool.

Contemporary Long Bien Bridge is the Brooklyn Bridge of Hanoi, iconic and sentimental. Teenager couples fasten padlocks on the span to symbolize their enduring love. But did you know that in 1947, during the Battle for the Dike Road, 1,200 Hanoians managed to cross under Long Bien (then Paul Doumer) Bridge and across the Red River, evading capture by French sentries and slipping off to battle the French in the mountains? (See Borton, "Ho Chi Minh: A Journey.") That would look fantastic in mosaic! Even better than those mandarins and Dong Son birds...
