Viet Fighter now offers yoga! Check out the Monday class at 6-7 PM. Note that the location has recently changed to 44 Au Co, Quang An, Tay Ho. Open to all levels. Stretch, build your strength, and meet cool people!

I've been going to Viet Fighter for almost a year now, taking the cardio boxing and cross fit classes, and I only wish I'd started going sooner (you know, before the pho xao had expanded the waistline).

The gym is basically a tin shed with mats on the floor, some punching bags, weights, and basic equipment, but you'll get a better workout in this tin shed that you could ever do in a fancy gym filled with TVs and expensive machines.

The cross fit class is a series of sprints, weights, resistance exercises like push-ups, and aerobic exercises like the good ol' fashioned high-knee jump. The cardio boxing class includes boxing of course, with bags and pads. Gloves are supplied. You will feel like Rocky. Guaranteed.

Long, the trainer, tailors the exercises and intensity to suit all levels, so the one class might include a complete beginner who can't do a single sit up (like me, one year ago), a kick-boxer getting fit for a fight, or a housewife losing some baby weight, and everyone will get pushed to their limit. There's a mix of men and women, and all ages, and it's a fun, supportive environment for getting fit.

While the gym might be no frills, Long is a qualified and experienced instructor who really knows what he's doing. If you're looking for a touchy-feely personal trainer, he is definitely not your guy, but if you want someone no-nonsense who shouts at you a lot, then he'll be right up your alley. Personally, I need to be shouted at a lot when it comes to exercise.

There are Muay Thai and other martial arts classes which seem popular too. You can contact the gym for a timetable: vietfighter@hotmail.co.nz

It's 160,000 for a class or 1.3 million for a ten-class pass, which I think you get three months to use up. There's also a monthly pass for 1.7 million, which gets you unlimited class attendance.
