I enjoy coffee from cafe Mai. I also do so without wringing my hands about the kids working there. Assuming the kids aren't family members who are simply pitching in, this is Vietnam THERE IS NO WELFARE. If a family needs a kid to work there is likely no alternative. Serving coffee is hardly brick making or coal mining. Better for these kids to have legal jobs than alternative "work" for kids that unscrupulous people are more than willing to provide. People do what they got to do to survive. If these kids really are just staff, maybe people ought to look into helping one of them personally instead of saying, "Well I don't drink child labor coffee."
I once buy coffee here to bring back to my office. It's good but a little salty ( I have no idea howcome it is :| )
The child labor made the coffee taste bitter and makes it hard to breathe/enjoy said coffee. Then again, the cafe invokes a lot of thought. I had a long heart to heart with myself about globalization, altruism, morality, etc.
So if you want any great but guilt/depression induced writing/thinking with some great coffee on the side, this is the place to go!
Sometimes I wonder if they put magical crack in that coffee..I did 2 "nau da"s every day I was there..let's just say I didn't sleep for a week and required the help of many a cocktails to pass out the nights of the following week. I've re-adjusted my biological clock by now but keep drinking..
A good place to buy coffee as a gift. The seating may not be perfect for all, but the coffee is strong, thick, and very tasty.
Great coffee, reasonable price, airy space. I often come here with the my friend after work. :D
