“I wish I had found this place years ago, back before I spent many thousands on fillings and root canals(in Austaralia) that have since started falling out. I went here for the first time after chomping on a bone/stone in a bowl of pho, losing two fillings. I was in a fair bit of pain, I had lef...”
I went here once as it seemed to be popular with the local. But personally I don't like the decoration. It's weirdly political to me. Drinks are so so. Never came back after the first time.
This place will take you back to the days when we were cutting up tires to make sandals, eating boiled unripe jackfruit to keep away the hunger, and were totally screwed if we ever lost the ration book for the monthly rice. Artfully stained wooden tables, a floor of recycled barrel staves, photographs from the album of the People's Army, and replicas of a few beautiful propaganda posters make this place feel like home circa 1982. Snacks and beverages are as usual, except the coffee. It stages a coup, overthrows Arabica, and keeps the people awake and productive all night.
So, this cafe is cooler than your older sister's tattooed boyfriend, who had a car (with a tape deck, no less), and who used to sneak you smokes...really, it doesn't actually need more praise from me.
But did I notice that a couple of the previous reviews mentioned the uncomfortable seating. I think this has now been addressed - when I was last there the chairs had apparently grown by about a foot, and had also sprouted backs. For the hard cores who might object to the arrival of comfortable chairs, there is still an upper mezzanine area with low tables completely devoid of chairs, let alone back-rests.
We visited Hanoi last month and discovered Cong Caphe. Loved their coffee bought pounds of it and brought it home. However, sadly, we now realize we should have bought more. Can their coffee be shipped to California? Or can they supply the name of the coffee beans, and the company that products it? Maybe it's already here in Southern California! Nothing here in our area compares...and Oh! Hoe we've searched and sampled, all to no avail.
Many Thanks in advance for assisting us.
So just to be clear, I went to the new one on Van Phuc. It was fun! I loved the theme, very interesting.
I gather that the staff is pretty new, so the fact that the orders took awhile was fine, we weren't in a hurry.
I was told by two other patrons to butt out because of the non-smoking section (complete with ashtrays??), but was given a table three feet away where I was free to smoke, so it all worked out.
I hope this place does well in this location; it's very charming. They lost one star because of the slow service, and because of the huge roach on the wall that scared the shit out of everyone in the bar.
If you like Cong Caphe - Trieu Viet Vuong...
