After reading the very good reviews here I really looked forward to be having a fantastic dinner here.
What a disappointment.
Old Hanoi is just like many other restaurants - they want to be special but end up being just as plain and predictable like the rest. Nothing wrong with that - but then dont pretend you are special.

First challenge came when ordering. For main course I wanted to order the squids with ginger - our waiter who clearly did not have one of her best days (at least I hope she has better days...) just stated that my choice was for her kind, not for my kind. I tried once again saying I wanted this dish and she just repeated her answer. I did not give up and third time she reluctant took my order.
Glad I did - because it was just as nice and tasty as expected.

The Royal Nem for starter was fantastic. Tasty and really something. But when I was almost done our waiter came with the main course and decided that I had had enough of the starter and wanted to clear the table. I held on to my plate which led her to remove the 2 types of dippings for the nem. I objected and she reluctant placed them at the table again.
A moment later my friends main course arrived and now she quickly took the dipping that was closest to her and left with it. I was quite surprised.
I normally dont mind that they bring the dishes to the table as they are ready - but in a restaurant that advertise that they have had Gordon Ramsey visiting, I actually did expect them to be able to serve main course when you had finished the starters. And certainly not remove stuff that you clearly was in the middle of eating. But guess I was aiming too high there.

Some people have praised the interior - I was not able to see what have made people so amazed. But maybe the different variations of purple they have used when repainting spots on the walls and the very enthusiastic looking way they had smashed the ceiling to make room for the aircon were special effects I just dont get.

All in all an ok place - but nothing more.

This restaurant has a great atmosphere, great food and large selection of your favourite drinks.
I have always had the set menu which comes with a few wines or beers. The food is a variety of the most tasty Vietnamese dishes. Some of the best VN food that I have had in a restaurant.
It is non-smoking and there are some traditional music playing in the background. They have not jammed in as many tables as physically possible so it is a pleasant experience without the influence of other dinners.
A good place to take your business colleagues that come to town wanting to try authentic Vietnamese food without sitting on the street. (If they are buying be sure to order the top shelf wine)

Tried it out as there were visitors in town and I had never been.
Waitress could not answer the most rudimentary questions as to the menu.
The food was fine but nothing special and there are better and more authentic places.
The restaurant was full of tourists. Overall, I dont recommend it and will not go back.

I took a friend the the restaurant for their cooking class, and we had an amazing time. The morning started with a tour of the local market where we learned not only about what we would be making in the class, but about all types of veggies and fruits... and ways to cook them.

It was great. The staff prepares the food (chopping and setting out what we need), so we can concentrate on how to mix it together and cook it using local methods.

For our class, we cooked in the garden (lovely) and selected Option 2... I have to say that our fresh spring rolls were the best I've had in Hanoi. I haven't had dinner at the restaurant yet, but if our cooking with their recipe was any indication, I'm going back soon!

As soon as we left, they mailed us the recipes so we could make these dishes at home. I highly recommend the course for people both visiting and living in Hanoi.

We had really high hopes for this place, being rated the #1 restaurant on this site. It tried hard but just didn't get there.

The food was very good on most counts. We ordered 4 dishes and 3 of them lived up to the billing, particularly the Tamarind Soft Shell Crab, easily the highlight of the night. Unfortunately, the pork clay pot was not good. The meat was chewy, not the delicate meat you normally get from Vietnamese clay pot, quite simply it hadn't been cooked long enough and it was like someone had grilled a pork chop and chucked it into a clay pot.

But the real let down was the service. The waitress just seemed distracted and even though there were only 4 other people in the restaurant, she just couldn't get her act together. A guy from one of the other tables had to get out of his seat and walk around to try and find her because she disappeared for long periods of time. She was far more interested in texting and talking to the other staff then providing any kind of service to the customers.

So, 3 stars because the food was mostly good, the settling is beautiful and when the weather cools down that outdoor patio will be a superb place for a meal. Just hope we get some better service next time.
