Donkey Bakery is a socially responsible company.

Social responsibility is at the heart of Donkey Bakery. We create employment and provide vocational training and support to people with disabilities, with the majority of our team members being hearing, visually or physically impaired, from disadvantaged communities. Our philosophy is not to employ staff based on official qualifications, but on one’s character, values and motivation to learn and grow. We then train them with the technical skills needed to succeed in our business operations.

Donkey Bakery (initially operating as Donkey Donuts) was founded in 2009 by Marc Stenfert Kroese and Luyen Shell in August 2009.

It is our mission to prove that people with disabilities can be successfully part of a competitive business environment, where superior levels of professionalism, customer service, quality control and hygiene are maintained. It is our vision to cultivate a sustainable business with at least eighty percent of our team being people with disabilities at all levels of our organization.

In addition to providing vocational training to our staff (baking, customer service, book-keeping, IT, management skills etc), we support and develop our team by encouraging personal growth. Donkey Bakery is committed to fostering an environment, which nurtures valuable life skills in order to empower each individual with a stronger sense of independence, confidence and greater opportunities for now and the future.

In developing countries, people with disabilities are typically among the poorest of the poor with limited opportunity to fully participate in society. Donkey Bakery is cooperating with other non-profit organizations to encourage other businesses to provide employment to people with disabilities thereby facilitating their integration into society and improving their life in general.

The team at Donkey Bakery aims to provide you with the most delicious, high quality gourmet bread, donuts, cakes and sandwiches. Your support of our business is a direct contribution to the development of opportunities for a young person with disabilities.

Donkey Bakery - feeding futures, feeding you!

Quality is acceptabel, price OK (not cheap!) but customer service shall be improved! Why they never manage to deliver on time?? Either way too late or too early! At least inform me when you are 40 minutes late!

No credit for being socially responsible. If you charge high rates then please deliver high quality incl. service!). I will order again but will look for other options as well!

Donkey Bakery, for my money, serves the very finest bread in Hanoi. Their Nordlander dark bread is incomparable and there is nothing like it in Hanoi. Another of their delicacies is their pretzels, especially with some spicy mustard. The chocolate donut holes are scrumptious.

Baking bread, quality bread, is an art and a skill. But also depends on quality ingredients. I have seen their kitchen and their equipment and I know they don't cut corners on the quality of their ingredients or attention to baking. They are passionate about bread and quality.

On top of all that, Donkey Bakery hires people with disabilities and helps them find dignity and a sense of purpose in a country where disabled people don't have a lot of opportunities. I admire that. And I admire their mission.

Donkey Bakery is a bright light and a rare find in Hanoi. I always feel good about giving them my business.

I use this for nothing but delivery, but for that end, it is great. Great value for money on sandwiches and the bread they do is not easily found elsewhere in Hanoi. If you're going there and expecting some sort of quirky, hipster dining experience, you're doing it wrong. They are a bakery with a few tables in back.

Very hit and miss these days, both with quality and delivery. Admirable intentions and the usual liberal superlatives in the reviews of the past, but I'm afraid that doesn't cover real life if improvements cant be made

Bread. For some of us, from different parts of the world, bread is a significant part of our diet. To me, good bread is really important. Especially for toasting purposes where it becomes deliciously hot and dripping with butter and spreads... But I digress.

Donkey bakes great bread. Really great bread. I love that they're a social enterprise and doing a lot to help disabled people work, learn and improve their lives. I love that, but it's still about the bread. Over the years in Hanoi I have scoured pretty much every major bakery, every new bakery that pops up, to find a consistent, reliable supplier of the bread I like to eat. It's easy to get plain old baguettes and white bread, even white toast bread. What I missed the most was grainy bread filled with seed and stuff. It became an embarrassing issue when I filled half a suitcase with such bread from Australia earlier this year...

That experience lead me back to Donkey. Previously, I had been to Donkey for lunch and tried a few of their breads, but irregularly. Donkey is a long way from my home so it's not exactly convenient to get to. However, several months ago I discovered their High Fibre Grain Loaf.

O M G !!!

This is the bread I had been searching for in Hanoi. For me, it's the perfect blend of grains, wholemeal bread and flavour. So I'm hooked. Happily, even though it regularly is baked in a small-size loaf, Donkey are happy to bake me a long-loaf if I ask for it. Here's the thing - Donkey are flexible. Open to customers asking for items not strictly on their menu. That counts for a lot. Usually I take a loaf or two home, manually slice it up into chunky toast slices and freeze in freezer bags, separated by baking paper. Makes for great toast options on weekends or when feeling lazy during the week for dinner.

Donkey's website is great for ordering. Often I will order the day before, or early in the morning, and either collect bread on my way through towards Tay Ho or have it delivered to my office during the week. The delivery service is brilliant. I regularly order lunch (great and diverse menu) from Donkey now, usually a ciabatta sandwich - fresh, soft and yummy. They are on time, every time and will deliver loaves of bread for me as well if I need them.

I could ramble on. Great business, great staff, great products, great service. Can't ask for more than that. If there was a sixth star, Donkey Bakery would get that too.

If you like Donkey Bakery...

Quite probably the very, very best bread in Hanoi. I'm never disappointed.
