I honestly don't understand why this restaurant is so popular.
The food is the same (if not worse) than your local bia hoi but far more expensive. If you eat downstairs, you have to put up with that bird in the cage squawking all through your dinner, and the service is as slow as treacle. Not to mention the fact that after we finally managed to order the waitress came back 4 times (I wish I was exaggerating) to tell us that items we'd ordered were 'finished'. Not her fault of course, but she wasn't exactly apologetic.
Nice building though!

I really enjoyed my times at Chim Sao. The only negative thing I have to say is that the quality of the food is not always the same. My favourite dish is the beef with mustard sauce, something I haven't found in bia hois yet. The seating in nice, the staff as well. Definitely a nice restaurant for a night out!

I came here the other night to celebrate my partner and his brother’s birthdays. My partner’s parents were visiting from Australia so it was quite a celebration for us. I came straight from work and while I waited for the others to arrive I asked the waitress where the bathroom was. There were no other customers in the restaurant and a large group of staff were sitting around waiting for service to begin. This group decided it would be fun to tell me the bathroom was in different directions around the restaurant. I stood there confused as they were all laughing and speaking to me in Vietnamese – which they realized I couldn’t speak. Finally the waitress I had initially asked, grabbed me by the arm and took me out to the kitchen where the chef was sitting. She pushed me into his lap and said I had to sleep with him first if I wanted to use the bathroom.

I was pretty embarrassed, so I waited outside for my partner and his family to arrive (still needing the toilet). Not wanting to ruin the night, I decided to eat there anyway but needless to say, NEVER AGAIN!

Did they think it was ok to treat me like that because I’m foreign and female?

1 star because the food was ok.

AMAZING. I lived opposite Chim Sao for 6 months and it quickly became our favorite local cuisine vendor. We ate there at least once a week and always found the food delicious and staff friendly. The restaurant decor is basic whilst maintaining a rustic charm. Some of our favorite dishes are the Bo Luc Lac, mountainous sticky rice, tomato tofu, fried pigeon with rice pancake, omelette with spinach and battered aubergine. Late in the evenings they have a tendency to run out of certain dishes, so arrive early to get the goods! I recommend to anyone looking for a good selection of traditional Vietnamese foods and a nice atmosphere.

wow! i didnt realise people could hate this place! i went here last night(12/04/2011) and enjoyed every part of it.

no stomach ache, everything was available and staff were very friendly! we had the caramel pork, beef wrapped in cabbage(actually lettuce), fried su su with garlic and some nem. all of which was very nice!

we also had a few beers and some rice wine, the rice wine was very good, whenever i go to highway 4 i always order "tao meo" rice wine which has quite a fruity taste so we ordered the same here and its much nicer(and cheaper!) than highway 4.

so for me i would recommend all the food that i ordered but especially the caramel pork. ngon vai!
